THE AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION TRANSFORMATION AGENDA


1.      GOAL OF THE EXTENSION TRANSFORMATION AGENDA:
To put in place a legislated, multi-plural, responsive, and market-oriented extension system with: an assured and regular sources of funding, a well-trained and motivated staff, effectively catering for a variety of actors along targeted value chains of interest to the government.

1.1.            Specific Objectives:
i)                    Make a case for the establishment of the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension (FDAE) to oversee, monitor and provide the leadership needed for an efficient and effective agricultural extension and advisory service delivery in Nigeria.
ii)                  To review the agricultural extension policies within the subsisting agricultural policies and recommend appropriate  policies that will ensure the effective participation of all stakeholders in a stable policy environment and adequate funding for the delivery efficient and effective agricultural extension and advisory services.
iii)                To recommend appropriate Institutional structures and arrangements for the delivery of effective and efficient multi-plural agricultural extension and advisory services in Nigeria.
iv)                To recommend demand-responsive extension systems/approaches and tools that will ensure the delivery of efficient and effective agricultural extension and advisory services for all the multi-actors in the targeted commodity value chains of interest to government.

NPFS/FFS TAINING FOR REFILS FACILITATORS, MTs, SITE MANAGERS, AND EA FACILITATORS

An NFPFS supported FFS Training for REFILS Facilitators, Master Trainers, Site Managers and EA Facilitators in Anambra State and selected States in the SE and SS Zones is scheduled to hold in Akwa, Anambra State from, Mon. May 22nd thru Thurs.May 26th. 2011.
The Training is primarily to review the FFS implementation challenges in Nigeria and impart the FFS global best practices to participants to ensure effective and hitch-free implementation of the FFS strategy in Nigeria. Participants are expected to bring along with them the report of the FFS Status in their States.

FARMER FIELD SCHOOL (FFS) IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY IN NIGERIA


CAPACITY BUILDING OUTCOMES TO DATE (2007 - 2010).
• 22 National Facilitators Trained in FFs Concept, Principles & Practice (3 weeks).
• 74 Master Trainers Trained (2 per State for 12 weeks: season-long ).
• 996 EA FFS facilitators trained in 28 States + FCT States.
• 24,267 farmers trained: (NW=5,340; NE=4,700; MB=3,700; SW=5,557; SE=3,100; SS=1,870).
• Nigeria FFS Training Manual (Currently being edited).
Major Challenge: Non payment of Counterpart funds by Federal, most States, and Local Governments. This has taken the steam out of the wonderful take off and solid foundation laid in the first season and the potential to initiate a true agricultural revolution for sustainable agricultural development.
